The gaint needlepoint artwork The Jinggang Mountain(figure 4-15) is 8.01 meters long, and 2.575 meters high, and is recently hung in Reception Hall 1 in the newly inaugurated Bayi Building.
It is based on a Chinese painting masterpiece, Huangyangjie, by Wei Zixi,a prominent painter in Jiangsu Traditional Chinese painting Institute. The initial work, painted in 1978? only measures 4.5 x 1.6m. As the needlepoint is about 11 times bigger than that, Mr. Wei was invited to add some newdetails to the painting in 1978. He produced some bold changing, blending the Vermillion and the dark ink specifically. Eighty percent of the new details were protected in vermillion, but the spirit of the initial work remains. The Chinese painting is currently gathered in the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong.
Traditionally, needlepoint is made according to oil paintings or photos, forming a photo with thousands of coloured dots. Chinese painting, nevertheless, sketch with constant lines and depicts with ink blots to convey the spirit. Work that based on a Chinese painting is hence a fresh field for exploration that will require understanding of both Chinese and western paintings.
The experts overcame each one of these troubles. They studied Chinese paintings, and worked hard to explore new techniques for needlepoint represent dark and reddish brownish lines and dots. The mountains and forests decorated with Vermillion are so grand and vivid that they have fully displayed the wonderful image of Jinggang Mountain as a holy place for revolution, and convey the heoric spirit of the mountain.
